Should Small Businesses Advertise on ChatGPT?

Author’s Note
ChatGPT Ads went from a $200,000 minimum commitment to self-service signup in about six months, and on 23 September 2026 it began rolling out in Malaysia. That is fast enough that most SME owners have not registered the change. This guide covers what actually shipped, whether it is worth testing for your business, and the part that matters most for a business trying to be found by AI: what advertising on ChatGPT does not buy. If you want a direct read on whether AI systems can currently understand and cite your business, the ThriveX AI Audit checks this specifically.
What Actually Shipped, and How Fast
In January 2026, OpenAI was asking select advertisers to commit at least $200,000 to take part in its ChatGPT ads beta, with some agencies reporting clients approached for $250,000. At that price the question did not apply to small businesses at all.
Six months later the entry barrier had effectively gone. OpenAI began testing ads with a US pilot in February 2026, expanded to eight further markets, then announced 31 European markets, and confirmed on 31 August 2026 that self-service access through Ads Manager was live across those European markets.
Figure 1 demonstrates how quickly the entry barrier to ChatGPT Ads fell, from a $200,000 minimum commitment in January 2026 to a Malaysian rollout with self-service signup by September 2026.
Asia followed. After launches in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and India, OpenAI began rolling out ChatGPT Ads across Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan on 23 September 2026, taking availability to more than 60 countries, with self-service access through Ads Manager for eligible businesses.
The platform also matured underneath that. OpenAI states it has expanded beyond CPM and CPC bidding to support conversion optimisation, added geo-targeting and custom audiences, and extended measurement through an OpenAI Pixel, a Conversions API, and third-party integrations, with tens of thousands of marketers having now advertised on ChatGPT.
Yes, You Can Now Buy Them in Malaysia
Malaysia is one of the seven Asian markets where OpenAI began rolling out ChatGPT Ads on 23 September 2026. Businesses can go through OpenAI’s ads team, agency partners, or self-service Ads Manager if they are eligible. Rollouts are gradual, so confirm your account’s access at ads.openai.com before planning a budget.
Two details matter for the decision. Ads are shown only to people on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro and Enterprise users see none, so part of your audience is unreachable through ads at all. And availability settles only whether you can buy, not whether you should. The question of whether ChatGPT mentions your business in its answers is already live, and it is answered somewhere else entirely.
What Advertising on ChatGPT Does Not Buy
This is the part that changes the decision for most SMEs.
Paying OpenAI places a labelled ad near the answer. It does not put your business inside the answer. When someone asks ChatGPT to recommend a supplier, a clinic, or an agency, whether your business appears in that response is determined by how well AI systems can find, understand, and cite you, which is not something on the rate card.
For a small business with a limited budget, that distinction usually settles the sequencing. Being recommendable is the durable asset; the ad is rented attention beside it. This is the same argument behind entity clarity: AI systems cannot cite a business they cannot confidently identify.
Who It Actually Suits Right Now
Four conditions make ChatGPT Ads worth testing rather than watching.
Your Buyers Use the Free Version
Ads reach only Free and Go users. If your buyers are professionals likely to pay for ChatGPT Plus or use it through an Enterprise plan, a share of them will never see your ad.
Your Buyer Researches Before Deciding
OpenAI positions the format around people exploring, comparing, and evaluating options. Considered purchases fit that. Impulse or purely local convenience purchases fit it less well.
You Can Measure Past the Click
Conversion optimisation, the Pixel, and the Conversions API only pay off if your own conversion tracking is sound. An account that cannot currently attribute a lead accurately will not learn anything from a new channel.
Your Destination Page Already Converts
A new traffic source multiplies whatever conversion rate you already have, which is the same reason more ad spend doesn’t mean more conversions on any other platform. Testing a new channel on a leaking page buys an expensive measurement of the leak.
Diagnostic Checklist
You are not ready to test ChatGPT Ads if:
Your Ads Manager account does not have access yet, or your buyers mostly use paid ChatGPT plans
You cannot state your current conversion rate on the page the traffic would land on
Conversion tracking is not verified as firing correctly today
Your budget for the test is small enough that a learning period would exhaust it
Nobody has checked whether ChatGPT currently describes your business correctly
Your business is not clearly identifiable to AI systems in the first place
Fix Sequence
Confirm your account’s access at ads.openai.com before spending time on strategy
Ask ChatGPT directly about your business category and see whether you appear at all
Fix entity clarity and citation readiness first, since that determines answer inclusion regardless of ad spend
Verify conversion tracking end to end before opening a new channel
Confirm the destination page converts existing traffic acceptably
Only then test, with a budget large enough to survive a learning period
What This Check Looks Like in Practice
Say you’ve read that ChatGPT Ads launched in Malaysia and you’re wondering whether to move part of next quarter’s budget. Here’s how the checklist above answers it in an afternoon.
Check your access at ads.openai.com first, and think about who your buyers are. If they mostly pay for ChatGPT, ads will miss a share of them.
Next, open ChatGPT and ask the question your buyers ask, for example which providers it would recommend in your category in Malaysia. Note whether you appear, whether competitors do, and whether what it says about you is accurate.
If you don’t appear, that’s the bigger opportunity. Ads sit beside answers rather than inside them, so entity clarity and answer-shaped content decide whether you’re in the answer itself, with or without ad spend.
If you have access and you already appear accurately, verify tracking and your landing page conversion rate first, then test with a budget large enough to survive a learning period.
Where the ThriveX AI Audit Fits
For most SMEs the more useful question is whether AI systems can currently identify, understand, and recommend your business, because that decides your visibility in the answer itself, where the ad cannot reach. Those are the same signals covered in how to get cited in Google AI Overviews.
This is where the ThriveX AI Audit fits. As a CRO and AEO diagnostic consultancy, ThriveX reviews whether your business is clear, citable, and answerable enough for AI systems to surface it, and whether the page receiving that attention can convert it.
If you want to know whether ChatGPT can currently describe your business accurately, the ThriveX AI Audit is priced at $49 during beta, with standard pricing at $99.
FAQ
Can small businesses in Malaysia advertise on ChatGPT?
Yes. OpenAI began rolling out ChatGPT Ads in Malaysia and six other Asian markets on 23 September 2026, with self-service access through Ads Manager for eligible businesses. Rollouts are gradual, so confirm your account’s access at ads.openai.com, and note ads only reach users on the Free and Go plans.
Does advertising on ChatGPT get my business into ChatGPT’s answers?
No. OpenAI states that ads are clearly labelled, separate from ChatGPT’s answers, and that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides. Appearing inside a recommendation is determined by how well AI systems can identify and cite your business, not by ad spend.
What did ChatGPT Ads cost at launch?
OpenAI asked select beta advertisers for a minimum commitment of $200,000 in January 2026, with some clients approached for $250,000. That barrier no longer applies where self-service access is available through Ads Manager, which now includes Malaysia for eligible businesses.
Should I test ChatGPT Ads or improve my AI visibility first?
Improve visibility first in almost every case. Ads reach only Free and Go users and only ever sit beside the answer, whereas being citable affects whether you appear in the answer at all, across every AI system rather than one platform.
